A New Paradigm in Anti-Aging Medicine: Addressing Galectin-3 in Cancer and Chronic Disease
Research on galectin-3 is a rapidly advancing field in medicine. Galectin-3 is directly involved in the aging process, as excess amounts of the circulating protein increase chronic inflammation and fibrosis-driven repair processes, resulting in hastened degeneration and progression to fibrotic, non-functional tissue. This process can affect every organ and system in the body and lead to advanced or premature aging and disease.
At normal levels, galectin-3 influences growth and repair processes. When elevated however, it drives the progression of chronic inflammation, fibrosis and malignant cellular growth. Galectin-3 is over-expressed on the surface of cancer cells and in areas of heightened inflammation leading to fibrosis. Extensive research now implicates elevated galectin-3 in progressive heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hepatitis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney fibrosis and other inflammation and fibrosis related illnesses; in addition to cancer progression and metastasis.
In this presentation, Dr. Isaac Eliaz, M.D., L.Ac., will discuss the mechanisms of elevated galectin-3 as an important diagnostic and prognostic biomarker of metastatic cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation and fibrosis of organs and tissues. Specific naturopathic treatment strategies, with a focus on galectin-3 as a quantifiable therapeutic target for chronic disease and anti-aging interventions will be shared. Specifically, Dr. Eliaz will highlight research demonstrating the clinical application of proven galectin-3 blockers and antagonists in the treatment of metastatic cancer, heart disease and pro-inflammatory and fibrotic diseases and conditions. He will also present guidelines for the clinical application of the galectin-3 blood test in assessing the risks and progression of these and other “age-related,” chronic, degenerative conditions involving elevated galectin-3. Protocols and guidelines for the application of natural galectin-3 antagonists, alone and in conjunction with other integrative approaches will be presented. Dr. Eliaz will discuss the interactions between natural galectin-3 antagonists and other botanicals. He will also discuss the clinical application of honokiol extract from Magnolia bark, a traditional Asian therapy, with explanation of molecular mechanisms and combinations with different botanicals in cancer and chronic disease treatment. Case studies will be shared.
