OAND Response to CPSO Consultation on Complementary Medicine
The OAND has submitted to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) our response to their consultation on the new draft policy on Non-Allopathic Therapies.
The OAND provided a detailed submission to the CPSO in August, 2010, raising concerns about the existing CPSO policy on Complementary Medicine, and outlining needed changes. The new draft CPSO policy largely addresses each of the 14 issues raised in the 2010 submission.
Specifically, the new policy encourages MDs to respect the choice of a patient to incorporate alternatives to conventional medicine into their health care, including treatment decisions that the MD does not agree with. MDs must refrain from expressing non-clinical judgments about non-allopathic care. This has the potential to foster a much more positive working relationship between MDs and NDs.
As part of respecting patient choice, MDs are encouraged to ask questions about the non-allopathic therapies that patients may be using so that MDs can make more informed decisions.
When talking to patients about non-allopathic care, the expectation is that MDs will limit their advice to what they know. Where patients want to know more, MDs are encouraged to assist patients, including by consulting with NDs or other practitioners, or referring the patient if necessary.
This new CPSO policy is important because it addresses cases where patients of some physicians have not had their choices respected or have been under pressure to no longer receive care they value from their ND. The OAND believes the CPSO’s new approach will result in better patient care and a more collaborative and positive working relationship between MDs and NDs.
