New Survey Shows Naturopathic Doctors Improve Health care System Sustainability
A survey commissioned by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and the OAND shows that those Ontarians who see an ND are helping to make the health care system more sustainable by reducing demand for health care services.
Almost half of Ontarians think their ND has helped them to reduce their use of prescription medicine. 42% report fewer visits to their family doctor and 29% report fewer hospital visits.
Naturopathic Doctors help patients restore and maintain good health. With more Ontarians interested in natural approaches to health, the demand for naturopathic medicine is growing. The survey found that almost 2 million Ontarians have seen an ND, and 40% report they are likely to in the next few years.
Currently, Ontario is consulting on new rules governing naturopathic medicine. NDs, working to the full extent of their training, have the potential to help the government manage some of the major cost drivers in health care, and at the same time be providing Ontarians with the health care that they want.
The study was conducted by Innovative Research Group. 606 interviews were conducted between August 17 and 23, 2011. The margin of error on a sample of 606 is +/-4.0%, 19 times out of 20.
