Diabetic Proof: A Functional Medicine Approach to Preventing the Disease
Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance is an increasingly common problem affecting approximately 14.4% of the adult Canadian population. Scientists have estimated that that the number of individuals diagnosed with Diabetes will rise to 2.4 million by 2016. As the incidence of these problems continues to grow, especially in middle and older aged adults, it is important that the integrated clinician not only recognize the magnitude of this problem but also, develop a diverse assessment framework, dietary, nutraceutical, and phytotherapeutic research-based treatment strategies that help their patients become “ diabetic proof. ” The session will illustrate the specific methods including lab testing that can be used to determine the best treatment strategies for each patient.  Participants will learn about the efficacy of a functional medicine framework that focuses on functionality at many levels, rather than a single treatment for a single diagnosis.
